Marco Melandri started racing in motocross when he was only 6 years only, and became national champion in his category. In 1989, he was second in European Motocross championship. Marco Melandri started minibike racing in 8 years of age, in 1990, and became two times national champion.
125ccm racing career of Marco Melandri started in 1996, when he contested European championship. In 1997, he was fourth in European championship, and also has won Honda trophy 125cc Grand Prix. The same year he made 125ccm world championship debut.
Marco Melandri finished his first full 125ccm world championship season in 1998 on respectable 3rd place. Same year he became Italian national champion in this class.
