2008-03-02 WSBK:Troy Bayliss takes Phillip Island double
Be first to comment this story
Troy Bayliss took fantastic double at his native Phillip Island in possibly his last appearance on his home circuit in form of WSBK rider. Bayliss avoided first race incident that occurred at the start line, and led first race after restart from the start to the end. In second race, initial leader was another Australian - Troy Corser, who crashed after 4 laps and left Bayliss in command. Troy Corser was second in first race, 4.2 second clear off Bayliss, but just half of the second in front of another factory Ducati of Michael Fabrizio. In second race MotoGP veteran Carlos Checa managed to grab second place in front of Suzuki's Fonsi Nieto. Everything worked well for Bayliss this weekend, specially as his (at least expected) rivals for title in 2008 were in trouble: Haga shown weak performance by ending races 1 and 2 in 8th and 7th respectively. Even worse, Max Baiggi left Phillip Island with 0 points and broken wrist, after showing fantastic pace in both races and crashing both times just before catching Bayliss. Crowd of 64,500 spectators witnessed fantastic racing at Phillip Island today.
Troy Bayliss (winner - Race 1 and Race 2) It's something you dream of, to have a double win and I knew this year it would be difficult to achieve but I have a great team behind me who all worked really hard. overnight They had to build a new bike for me from scratch after my crash yesterday. I had a few ups and downs this weekend. After Race 1 I was struggling with the last 6 laps but in the end I managed to take the win. In the second race the tyres were a little slower but I felt better on the bike which was more consistent and a pleasure to ride. After race 1 I was so tired but after the second one I felt great. I had to concentrate hard today as in the second race, even though I was ahead I was aware I had to keep it together and put in some consistently good laps. It's been incredible, great weather and some good racing. I know there will be fighting to come later this season so two wins like that was just fantastic.
