Valentino Rossi today scored sixth consecutive victory at Mugello in a dramatic race that saw Italian having terrible start and making his way to the top in opening laps of the race. Once in the lead, Rossi was threatened only by Dani Pedrosa, who was constantly behind, pressuring Rossi. However, in last part of the race Rossi managed to make gap to Pedrosa and win. Alex Barros rode fantastic race to finish in third, taking it from Championship leader, Casey Stoner, who ended race in 4th place.
It was Stoner who lead race from the start, looking like he is going to make another dominant victory and demolish confidence of his title competitors. Even more, as Stoner was joined by Capirossi in second place, it looked that Ducati duo will be able to bring long-awaited home victory for Italian team. Capirossi got in front in lap 4, looking stronger than we saw him for a long time. However, Capirossi was in lead for only two laps, before starting to go backwards, eventually finishing race in 7th place.
Dani Pedrosa was man who charged from 6th place at the end of lap one to lead in lap 6. Valentino Rossi was also on the move, as he recovered from 8th in lap 2, to get in front of Pedrosa in lap 8. Italian and Spanish rider on Michelin tyres were on the hot pace, with rest of the pack loosing them from the sight. Long Mugello main straight was the place where Dani Pedrosa used top speed of his Repsol Honda few times to get in front of Rossi, but Rossi was always able to return in front of Spaniard in twisty part of the circuit. In last third of the race it became obvious that Pedrosa can't stay with Rossi, finishing race in second, around 2 seconds behind Rossi.
Surprise of the day came from Alex Barros, who had good start and stayed with leading group, gradually building up his pace to get in 3rd position in lap 20, returning to MotoGP podium after year spend in Superbikes. Casey Stoner ended race in 4th place, picking valuable points for Championship battle.
John Hopkins rode another strong race, at some point even threatening Stoner for 3rd place, but this time Suzuki rider had to settle in 5th place. Toni Elias came from the back of the pack to finish in solid 6th, in front of Elias. Vermeulen transformed his second position on the grid to solid 7th place, in front of Melandri, who was once more unable to get good result at his home soil. Nicky Hayden completed top 10 Mugello finishers.
This victory of Valentino Rossi took him 12 points closer to Stoner in Championship battle, with difference now reduced to only 9 points. Dani Pedrosa is also closer to Stoner now, promissing exciting battles for every point in forthcomming races. Despite Rossi and Pedrosa taking 1st and second for Michelin today, next Michelin rider was Hayden in 10th place, showing that Michelin still has lot of work to do in order to catch Bridgestone.
