Suzuki rider John Hopkins was the fastest man of the first free practice, but Valentino Rossi striked back in second free practice to set new fastest time of 1:46.981, around 1.2 seconds faster than time set by Hopkins in FP1. This time set by Valentino Rossi was also around one second faster than previous fastest race lap set by Loris Capirossi in 2005. Nice weather conditions, with air temperature of 24 degrees Celsius helped all riders to improve their times from FP1.
Shinya Nakano continued with good performance on his home territory as he set second fastest time, 0.334 seconds behind Rossi. Marco Melandri found speed to be third fastest rider of the day, in front of American pair of Colin Edwards and Nicky Hayden.
Toni Elias set 6th fastest time, in front of Loris Capirossi and FP1 leader, John Hopkins. Randy De Puniet was second fastest Kawasaki today in 9th place, with Kawasaki wildcard rider Naoki MATSUDO ending day 1 in 16th place. Kenny Roberts Jr completed top 10 fastest riders in combined free practice times of day 1.
