2008-06-01 Valentino Rossi continues Mugello rule
Be first to comment this story
Valentino Rossi continued where he left two weeks ago, as he grabbed 7th consecutive Mugello victory in front of home fans. Casey Stoner continued steady improvement in form, taking second place. Dani Pedrosa did everything in his power keep 3rd place on Michelin tires that started to loose grip close to the end of the race.
Rossi had another bad start from pole position, at one point going back to 5th position. On the other hand, Pedrosa and Stoner both started great, entering first corner as first and second, respectively. Rossi was determined not to let his rivals go, so he soon found his way to the top, getting into the lead. Everyone has expected that he will easily run in the distance, but he was not able to build gap to Stoner and Pedrosa so fast. Rossi had to work his way to the victory lap by lap, and at some point in the race he reached 3.5 seconds advantage over Stoner, which proved to be enough to take 91st career victory.
Stoner and Pedrosa fought for the second place for the most of the race, but at some point Stoner managed to break away, as Pedrosa seemed to be in problems with tires. From that point, Pedrosa was significantly slower than leaders, and three laps before the end of the race, his 3rd place came in danger from sensational Alex De Angelis, who rode fantastic race and eventually finished it in 4th place.
Colin Edwards worked his way to the 5th place, edging team-mate Toseland for that position. Loris Capirossi, who was among leaders in first part of the race, ended race in 7th place, showing that besides track knowledge, proper machinery is required for the good result. Andrea Dovizioso was unable to beat Capirossi for 7th place, so he had to settle in 8th. Sninya Nakano ended race in 9th place, while Chris Vermeulen completed top 10 finishers in Mugello today.
Jorge Lorenzo got his part of attention today by crashing from the race. Other crashers were Randy De Puniet (who could guess) and Marco Melandri, while John Hopkins also left green marks on the asphalt of Mugello.
