Rizla Suzuki MotoGP has completed the first day of the Phillip Island test in Australia with the team having a clear indication that there is more to come from the new Suzuki GSV-R800. John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen concentrated on getting the bike set-up for the 4.4km Australian circuit, and although the weather intervened later in the day - as strong winds blew off the Pacific Ocean and rain started to fall – both riders were satisfied with their day’s work.
Hopkins recorded a fastest lap of 1’31.80 during his 56 laps and was pleased with the way the bike performed. He believes that the GSV-R800 will be better than the 990cc around Phillip Island and will be looking to improve on that time over the next two days.
Vermeulen clocked up 53 laps on his ‘home’ circuit and was only just behind Hopkins with a quickest time of 1’32.03. He worked methodically with his team to get the best set up for the bike, and they have highlighted some areas that they will be working on over the next few days.
