Alex Barros on way to his maiden Superbike victory After four podium finishes in his debut season in World Superbike series, Brazilian Alex Barros finally took highest step on the podium at race 1 in Imola. Barros started race 1 at Imola from 8th place on the grid, had another bad start as we saw many times this season, and then made his way through the field to his first World Superbike victory.

World Superbike championship leader, Troy Baylis, lead opening part of the race 1, but tyre choice he made for race 1 saw him struggling when tyres have worn-off, so he ended in 5th place, which was enough for him to become 2006 World Superbike champion with three races remaining. Bayliss did not make same mistake twice, as he got harder compound tyres for race 2 which he won in front of charging Alex Barros. Barros was definetelly man of the race 2, as he once again had bad start and charged through the field to the brilliant second place.

In race 1, James Toseland took second place, in front of Andrew Pitt. Noriyuki Haga has been given 4th place by Troy Bayliss in race 1, with Bayliss completing top 5 finishers.

In race 2, behind Bayliss in 1st place and Barros in second place, Kagayama was last podium finisher. Pitt was 4th fastest, in front of Toseland who completed top 5 race 2 finishers.

After Baylis has lifted championship title, close battle is still for second place, between Toseland and Haga. Toseland is currently only 2 points in front of Haga. Similar battle is also for 4th place, where Pitt leads Barros by 8 points.
