2009-04-13  Stoner storms to MotoGP opener victory in Qatar
Be first to comment this story

Casey Stoner wins in QatarCasey Stoner completed fantastic weekend with victory in one day delayer Qatar race, leading race from start to finish. Stoner had great start from pole position and built 2 second lead at the end of the first lap, increasing it to almost eight seconds at the end of the race. Valentino Rossi had decent start, but stuck behind Capirossi and Lorenzo, spending too much time behind them and loosing touch to Stoner. By the time he got in second place, Stoner was already nearly 3 seconds away. In first part of the race, Rossi worked hard to reduce this margin, reaching 1.8 seconds at one point, but afterward Stoner upped his pace and hopes of Rossi came to an end. Jorge Lorenzo completed podium in Qatar, after battling for third position with Andrea Dovizioso in first half of the race.

Colin Edwards this time managed to transfer his preseason potential and practice performance to solid 4th place, making string on 3 Yamaha's in top 4. Andrea Dovizioso was best Honda rider in 5th place, equaling his last year result on this track. Alex De Angelis had great race, except incident in which he almost knocked Dani Pedrosa from the bike. Anyway, De Angelis finished in decent 6th place, in front of Chris Vermeulen in 7th. Best Ducati non-Stoner rider this year will probably be Mika Kallio, who took 8th place on his Ducati debut. Toni Elias managed to get 9th place, in front of Randy de Puniet, who managed to finish race, which is a good start for fast but crash-prone Frenchman.
