2007-11-02 Stoner stamps authority on day one in Valencia

 Casey Stoner once again has started preparations for racing day on high note, dominating both free practice sessions, setting times unreachable for other riders. Surprise of the day came from Sulvain Guntoli, who was best Yamaha rider today, far faster from factory Yamaha of Valentino Rossi. Fast lap from Guintoli came as single lap, so it is quite possible that he was on Qualifying tyres, as we have previously seen from French rider. Dani Pedrosa was fastest Michelin rider, and according to his free practice times it seems that Spanish rider has decent race pace.
Marco Melandri was 4th fastest rider of the day, in front of Chris Vermeulen, who was much faster than his team-mate, Hopkins - 10th fastest today. Randy de Puniet once again came into good form really fast, being constantly fast and ending day as 6th. Alex Barros set 7th time of the day in preparation for his possibly last MotoGP race, suffering bike problems in progress. Valentino Rossi was unable to perform better than 8th, once again suffering from lack of grip from Michelin tyres. Nicky Hayden was 0.03 seconds from Rossi in 9th.
British rider Chaz Davies had nasty crash in first free practice and had to skip second free practice in order to perform detailed medical checks. Medical examinations have shown that Davies does not have any broken bones, and he will have to wait for tomorrow to see if he will be able to ride.
