Casey Stoner broke 7 year winning strike of Valenitino Rossi in Mugello and brought fantastic victory to Italian manufacturer at home track. Race scenario was quite similar to one in Le Mans, as race started as wet, and riders entered pit somewhere around the middle of the race to swap bikes. In first part of the race, Valentino Rossi was man on the mission, finding his way from 6th place after bad start to the leading position, which he handed to no one else than Marco Melandri before going to change bike. After bike swapping, Casey Stoner immediately found the pace and found his way to the victory and championship lead. Jorge Lorenzo, who experienced crash in sighting lap, once again found good tactics and ended race in second place. Rossi completed podium on his home track.
Andrea Dovizioso was strong in first part of the race, leading it at one point, but at the end he had to settle in his usual 4th place. Loris Capirossi shown fantastic fighting spirit, as he rode his Suzuki 110% to get 5th place, at one stage even fighting for lead with Casey Stoner. Colin Edwards sneaked to 6th place, just in front of his team-mate Toseland, who was the first rider to swap bikes. Randy De Puniet once again finished race and earned decent 8th place, in front of home rider, Niccolo Canepa who took credible 9th place. Chris Vermeulen, initial wet race leader, faded to 10th place, same as Marco Melandri, who was unable to make sensation which seemed possible at one stage.
Dani Pedrosa suffered another crash in the lap 14, again hurting already injured hip. After Mugello, Casey Stoner is new championship leader, 4 points ahead of Lorenzo and 9 points ahead of Rossi. Dani Pedrosa lost the touch with leaders after crash at Mugello, now being 33 points behind Stoner.
