Valentino Rossi wins 5th consecutive Australian Grand PrixValentino Rossi has scored his 11th victory of the season today in Australia. This was Rossi's 5th consecutive victory at Phillip Island, which brought constructors title to Yamaha. We saw American Nicky Hayden leading opening laps of the race, before being redelegated to second by Rossi, who led race untili hlfway stage, when Hayden retaken first place. However, Rossi soon recovered his first position and eventually finished race in 1st place, one second clear of Hayden.

Hayden was in hard battle in some stage of the race with Melandri and Checa, but managed to find his rhythm and break away from thoose two, making gap of about three seconds from Checa, who edged Melandri for third place for just 0.017 seconds. After being with race leaders in early stages of the race, Gibernau faded back in lonely 5th place, finishing race in 5th about ten seconds behind team-mate Melandri. Colin Edwards also had good start, but as race progressed he was going backward, finishing in lonely 6th place, which was given to him by Alex Barros who crashed from that position.

Interesting fight was for 7th place between Nakano, Elias and Tamada, which was won by Kawasaki rider. He finished 0.048 seconds away from Tamada, who edged Elias for 8th place. However, credible 9th place was good result for young Elias who seems to gets in great form as season goes on. John Hopkins finished in 10th place, five seconds from Australian Chris Vermeulen who had great MotoGP debut at his home track. Ruben Xaus finished in 12th, in front of James Ellison and Franco Battaini, both being last point scorers for Blata WCM. Second Kawasaki rider Olivier Jacque fininsed in last place.

Max Biaggi, who lied second in the championship before this race, crashed halfway first lap, this way being re-delegated in championship standings to 5th place, 11 points behind Hayden and Melandri, both having same number of points. Colin Edwards now lies 4th in championship, 8 points behind Hayden and Melandri. This makes rest of the championship more exciting, specially if we consider how unconsistent second place contenders were so far.
