2006-06-17 MotoGP qualifying: Rossi back on pole in Catalunya

After suffering combination of bad luck and chassis problems, Valentino Rossi and Camel Yamaha team today got pole position for first time this season. Rossi set fastest lap of 1:41.855, which is new MotoGP lap record at this track. Qualifying practice looked as usual - riders were still on the race tyres for first half of the session, and somewhere in the middle of session, Kawasaki team decided to put qualifiers on. Shinya Nakano and Randy De Puniet set fastest times and stayed on the top of the time sheets for some time, until others decided to switch to qualifiers in last quarter of the session.

Besides Rossi, only man to go under 1.42 today was American John Hopkins, who once again rode his Suzuki to the absolute limit for second position on the grid. Kenny Roberts Jr brought some smiles in Team KR garage by qualifying 3rd, which is best result for a while. Australian Chris Vermeulen was able to utilize knowledge of the Catalunya track and managed to qualify as 4th today. After being on pole position early in the session, Shinya Nakano was redelegated to 5th place on the grid, which is stil decent result for Japanese rider and his team.

Loris Capirossi was nowhere today during the qualifying, and he finally managed to get 6th spot on the grid after last minute effort. Nicky Hayden, championship leader, today managed to qualify only as 7th, in front of fellow Honda riders Casey Stoner and Marco Melandri. Randy De Puniet completed top 10 qualifiers today.
