Valentino Rossi today continued his way back to the top of the MotoGP as he took pole position on his home soil, at Mugello. After early fast lap set by usual suspect Colin Edwards, Rossi put things under control and set new circuit record of 1:48.130. This was first pole position for Rossi on Bridgestone tires, which seem to work perfectly in Italian circuit. Dani Pedrosa was once again right behind Rossi, at least in terms of qualifying pace, as it seems that he still lacks some speed in race set-up. Loris Capirossi took advantage of his home soil and riding behind Rossi he secured start from 3rd position for tomorrow's race.
Casey Stoner will start Italian race from the first position in the second row, but what is more important for Australian rider, it seems that he is the only rider in the field that can match the race pace set today by Rossi. Colin Edwards was early pole setter, but today it was not meant for him to rule qualifying - maybe he will try to do it in the race. Nicky Hayden put lot of efforts to qualify outside of the second row.
Jorge Lorenzo, despite in better shape than in previous two races, did not show such speed as in previous events, qualifying "only" in 7th place. Another rookie, James Toseland, occupied middle spot in 3rd row, while Shinya Nakano completed it in 9th place. Alex De Angelis was best of Honda rookies in 10th place. Wildcard Honda rider, Tadayuki Okada, qualified in 15th on the pneumatic valve RC212V, beating three remaining Ducati's and usually slower Kawasaki of Anthony West.
