Rossi in action in Indianapolis, where he took historic pole positionValentino Rossi ended string of pole positions set by Casey Stoner, as he edged Australian rider for just 0.084 seconds. Rossi dominated last part of the qualifying session, as he was lowering lap times every time he took the track. Stoner made his final effort in last seconds of the qualifying session, managed to overcome deficit of more than 0.3 seconds in last two sections and just missed his 8th consecutive pole position. Jorge Lorenzo returned to front row and once again shown that he is gaining confidence and speed that he demonstrated in first part of the season.

Nicky Hayden was first of riders defending American flag on their home soil, and he did best he could do to take 4th spot on the grid. He was backed in his patriotic attempt by Suzuki wildcard Ben Spies who qualified 5th, while Randy de Puniet took the glory of best satellite Honda rider in 6th.

Andrea Dovizioso was just behind in 7th place, while Dani Pedrosa trailed two satellite Hondas on his factory bike shoed in Bridgestone tires and qualified as 8th. Toni Elias demonstrated speed on race tyres, but on qualifying rubber he had to settle in 9th place. James Toseland was edged his American team-mate for last position in top 10 qualifiers in Indianapolis.
