 Opening free practice session in Motegi, Japan, saw Valentino Rossi setting fastest time of the session, while Dani Pedrosa suffered crash after just five minutes of practice in which he broke left collarbone in three places. Andrea Dovizioso was second fastest in Motegi, 0.2 seconds behind Rossi's best effort. Jorge Lorenzo was third fastest, while Casey Stoner and Ben Spies completed top 5 fastest riders in opening session in Japan.
