2009-04-24 Rossi edges Stoner in first Japanese practice

Once again, first free practice in Japan seamed to be one of Stoner-dominated sessions, but Valentino Rossi managed to get in front of his rival in last minutes of the session, beating his time by just 0.056 seconds. Jorge Lorenzo set third time of the day, 0.42 seconds behind his team-mate.
Rizla Suzuki duo of Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi sandwiched satelitte Yamaha of Colin Edwards in 5th place. Andrea Dovizioso had steady start in 7th place, in front of Marco Melandri in 8th. Toni Elias took 9th spot, while James Toseland completed top 10 fastest riders in fist free practice session at Motegi.
Free practice at Motegi saw two accidents, both involving rookie riders - Yuki Takahashi had off-track excursion, while Mika Kallio had serious high-side, fortunately returning to the action without injuries. Record times from 2008. race were out of range for MotoGP riders in their first outing, and there is still around 1.5 seconds to be found by riders to match 2008. best race-pace.
