2007-10-19 Randy de Puniet sets pace in Sepang
Be first to comment this story
Kawasaki rider Randy de Puniet set fastest time of the first day of free practice session for Malaysian Grand Prix, as he improved his time from first free practice session for more than 3 seconds. Casey Stoner, who was fastest in FP1, set second fastest time of the day, only 0.011 seconds behind de Puniet. Marco Melandri has also significantly improved from first free practice session, setting 3rd fastest time in FP2. Rain shower before second qualifying session was the reason why most of the riders spend first part of the session in their garages, waiting for slippery, newly resurfaced track to dry out.
Dani Pedrosa was best Michelin rider in 4th place - and he was first of only two Michelin riders in top 10 - second being Nicky Hayden in 10th place. Anthony West proved potential of Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR in Malaysian track, as he set 5th fastest time of the day. Toni Elias get back into form in 6th place, in front of best Yamaha rider today - Sylvain Guintoli. Suzuki pair of Vermeulen and Hopkins completed day in 8th and 9th place.
Pair of factory Yamaha riders, Rossi and Edwards, seems to be in trouble again. Edwards was 14th fastest, while Rossi was further down in 16th place, around 2.5 seconds off the time set by de Puniet.
Despite weather conditions being not perfect, riders are almost on race pace from last year - fastest time set today being in range of around 0.8 seconds from time set last year by Loris Capirossi. However, looking at the time tables, it seems that Michelin may be in trouble again, as they have only two riders in top 10.
