2006-09-16 Nicky Hayden bounces back to Australian pole

Nicky Hayden bounced back from average result in Sepang to set pole position for tomorrow's GMC Australian Grand Prix. Hayden set new pole position record of 1:29.020, getting into ideal position to defend his championship position in first of remaining four races. Shinya Nakano, who topped time sheets in most of qualifying, managed to get second position on the grid in last flying lap. Valentino Rossi, who was positioned mid-pack throught the most of the session, striked back in last lap to get 3rd place on the grid.
Kenny Roberts Jr qualified 4th, in front of Yamaha duo of Colin Edwards and Carlos Checa. Checa made superb qualifying on Dunlop shoed YZR-M1, also setting decent pace on race tyres. Marco Melandri ended qualifying in 7th place, in front of Casey Stoner, who was, despite solid race-pace, unable to qualify better than 8th for his home race. Randy De Puniet completed third row as second fastest Kawasaki.
Dani Pedrosa rode brave despite injuries sustained week before, qualifying in 10th. Makoto Tamada was 11th, in front of Ducati pair of Sete Gibernau and Loris Capirossi. Both Ducati riders have shown great race pace in practices, which they failed to transform to good grid positions. Toni Elias qualified as 14th, in front of Suzuki pair of John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen, booth of them being quite unsatisfied with this result. Alex Hofmann ended qualifying session in 17th place, in front of James Ellison and Jose Luis Cardoso.
