Following yesterday’s heavy rain, thick fog delayed the start of the second day of testing in Jerez this morning before giving way to sunshine and a dry track, providing teams with possibility to continue development work on day 2 of Jerez test. Marco Melandri was again fastest rider on his Bridgestone shoed Honda, in front of Valentino Rossi, who managed to find speed on dry Jerez track. Dani Pedrosa was 3rd fastest today, in front of Surprisingly fast Alex Hofmann on satelitte Ducati.
Toni Elias was last rider today to lap under 1.41 mark. Casey Stoner was 6th fastest, in front of Carlos Checa. Randy De Puniet edged Edwards for 8th place. Colin Edwards completed top 10 riders today.
Jerez test will end tomorrow, and it will feature 40 minutes qualifying session. Winner of this session will drive-away in brand new BMW car.
Top three rider claims:
Marco Melandri: Today we did a good job, testing different things in preparation of the race. We tested many race tyres finding interesting solution and only in the end we tested two qualifying tyres because in Qatar it will be very important to start from the first rows. I’m happy with this result but I think that we will need to be faster if we want to get the car! I’m joking. I think we still need to improve because I think that tomorrow everybody will go faster.
Valentino Rossi: Today we started where we left off yesterday, trying to work out how to adapt the good setting from Qatar to this track. We figured a few things out in the morning and kept on making progress and actually what we’ve found is quite a long way from the Qatar setting and also from the old setting we used here, but anyway it works great! It felt good all day and I was doing consistently quick times, before we put in our ‘first-choice’ tyre from Qatar near the end and then it felt really fantastic. It really is a great tyre, so hopefully Michelin will have lots of those for me this season! I was right up there on the time sheets until the end when a few people put qualifiers in, but that wasn’t on our agenda today and we’ll have a go at that tomorrow. Of course there’s the competition tomorrow and it’s definitely the day to make a statement, so we’ll see how it goes!
Dani Pedrosa: Today we tested mainly chassis things with a view to improving the race set-up. We had some options to try and we found some positive results so I’m happy with that because we improved our basic set-up. Also we tested some rear Michelins tyres – maybe two or three – to narrow down our options for the race. Because of the late start we didn’t do a long run today. Tomorrow will be an unusual day with the qualifying session in the middle of the test so we have to find the moment to make a longer run if we can.
