Jorge Lorenzo once again demoralized his competitors by setting pole position times unreachable for them, also having fantastic pace on race tyres. Lorenzo improved previous pole position record held by Rossi by 0.485 seconds. Dani Pedrosa snatched second position on the grid in final seconds of the qualifying, also demonstrating race-pace that is quite close to one of Jorge Lorenzo. Valentino Rossi continued his progress with Bridgestone tyres, being consistent on race tyres in first part of the session, and later managing to grab 3rd place on the grid on Bridgestone qualifier. Other Bridgestone riders, however, were not performing in Estoril, as they stretched from Stoner in 9th to Guintoli in 18th.
Nicky Hayden will be first man in second row in race tomorrow, in front of Tech 3 Yamaha pair of Colin Edwards and James Toseland. Andrea Dovizioso was fastest non-factory Honda in 7th place, in front of Randy de Puniet in 9th. Casey Stoner was again well off the pace of practice leaders, 1.5 seconds behind pole setter in 9th place. John Hopkins was not able to go faster than 10th.
