John Hopkins topped timesheets on day 1 of MotoGP free practice in Shanghai, setting fastest time of the day in second free practice. Despite all riders have improved their times in second free practice, time set by Hopkins is still around second slower than lap record set last year by Dani Pedrosa on 990cc bike. Marco Melandri powered his Honda to second fastest time, in front of last year's winner, Dani Pedrosa. Interesting fact was that top 14 riders were covered by less than one second today, showing how competitive MotoGP field is.
Nicky Hayden seems to be recovering from bad start of the season, as he was consistently on the pace, ending day as 4th fastest. Loris Capirossi was fastest Ducati rider today, showing that top speed of the Ducati Desmosedici is not only parameter that matters on Chinese track. Valentino Rossi was 6th fastest rider today, despite topping time sheets early in the session.
Colin Edwards set 7th fastest time behind team-mate, in front of Casey Stoner, who did not fulfilled expectations of many people. Alex Hofmann shown some improvement in speed and set 9th time, in front of Carlos Checa who completed top 10 riders on day 1 in Shanghai.
