2005-01-11 Dakar rally news: Fabrizio Meoni tragical death

 Fabrizio Meoni, Gauloises motor bike rider, died today in tragic accident on the route of the Dakar rally, between Atar and Kiffa in Mauritania.
Restarted at the front of the race after the refueling stop, located at km 175 of the special stage of the day, the Italian rider crashed at km 184. It is David Fretigne, one of the Gauloises riders, who arrived the first on the spot of the accident, to let off the distress beacon of Fabrizio Meoni.
Gauloises rider from many years, Fabrizio Meoni was one of the principal figures of the Dakar that he won in 2001 and in 2002. He was taking part for the 13th time at the African race.
Fabrizio Meoni celebrated his 47th birthday on the last 31st December in Barcelona, the day before the start of this 27th Dakar, surrounded by his fellow-team members.
All the employees of the Altadis group join the co-presidents, Jean-Dominique Comolli and Pablo Isla, in order to address their sincere condolences to his wife Elena and to her children Gioele and Chiara.
