First day of free practice at Phillip Island circuit saw Kawasaki rider Randy De Puniet setting fastest time of the day: 1:29.745. According to analyse of the De Puniet's times, it is quite sure that he used qualifying tyres, as well as other few riders who managed to set fast times. Time of Randy De Puniet was still slower than last year's pole position record set by Nicky Hayden (1:29.337)
Loris Capirossi has continued with series of strong performances, as he set second fastest time today, and he did that on the one of last laps in his long run. At the end of the day 1 it seems that Capirossi has found good set-up for the race, and that he has race-pace that only few riders may follow, according to day 1 results. Unlike Loris Capirossi, Nicky Hayden seems to still struggle with set-up, because he set his fastest time in one fast lap, which makes us suspect that qualifiers were involved in this run.
Like his team-mate, Sete Gibernau has shown strong pace today, riding in high 30's and low 29's, and also setting 5th fastest time in long run. Shinya Nakano was also on decent race-pace today, posting times similar to ones set by Gibernau. Casey Stoner was unable to transform home soil advantage to result better than 6th place. Marco Melandri was 7th fastest today, in front of Valentino Rossi. Kenny Roberts Jr was 9th fastest, with Carlos Checa setting impressive 10th fastest time.
