2006-10-13 Casey Stoner fastest on day 1 at Estoril

 First day of free practice for GRANDE PREMIO DE PORTUGAL saw Casey Stoner setting fastest time of the day. Stoner set new lap record of the Estoril circuit by posting time of 1:38.218. Stoner improved his time from first free practice session for almost two seconds. Nicky Hayden set second fastest time of the day and shown that he is ready for title fight in first of remaining 2006 MotoGP season races. Kenny Roberts Jr was third fastest rider of the day at Estoril.
Carlos Checa set impressive 4th fastest time, being fastest Yamaha of day 1 at Estoril. Dani Pedrosa was 5th quickest, with Colin Edwards completing top six fastest riders. Sete Gibernau was 7th fastest, in front of Valentino Rossi, who ended day as 8th fastest, despite being fastest in first free MotoGP practice.
John Hopkins posted 9th fasted time, in front of Shinya Nakano who completed top 10 riders of the day 1. Interesting fact was that top 11 riders were covered by only one second. Another great thing we saw at Estoril MotoGP free practice today was appearance of new MotoGP team, Ilmor SRT, which presented their ILMOR X3 bike. Ilmor X3 was ridden by MotoGP veteran Garry McCoy, who improved his time from first free practice for little less than 1.5 seconds. Combination of McCoy and Ilmor X3 800cc MotoGP bike was about 4 seconds of the pace set by Casey Stoner on 990cc Honda RC211V, which is great result for this prototype bike which made it's first MotoGP appearance.
