2007-03-23 Carlos Checa tops timesheets on day 1 in Jerez

 Day 1 of free practice for GRAN PREMIO bwin.com DE ESPANA brought few unexpected riders to the top of the timesheets, with two top riders from first free practice session, Kenny Roberts and Marco Melandri, being unable to improve their times in second free practice session. Carlos Checa set fastest time of the day in second free practice session, in front of home favorite Dani Pedrosa in second. Another Spanish rider, Toni Elias, completed top 3 fastest rider of day 1 in Jerez.
Casey Stoner dropped from 3rd fastest in fp1 to 4th in fp2, promissing another good weekend for Ducati rookie. Kenny Roberts was 5th fastest rider of the day, despite setting best time in fp1. Valentino Rossi was not on the sharp edge today, managing to improve his time from fp1 and to post only 6th fastest time of the day. John Hopkins was 7th fastest, in front of team-mate Vermeulen.
Colin Edwards was 9th fastest, with Barros completing top 10 fastest riders of the day 1 in Jerez. Defending world champion, Nicky Hayden, once again seems to be unabe to find speed on 800cc RC212V, as he ended day 1 as 13th fastest.
